"Did you sleep any?" Shea asked when she woke around 11:00.
"Well...not really. I'm too giddy for sleep." I took my phone off the nightstand and pressed the power button. I had a couple missed calls and some texts from other friends wanting details. How news traveled this fast, I did not know. While scrolling through the texts, I found what I was looking for: one from Colin from about forty-five minutes earlier.
Colin <3: Good morning, beautiful. What time should I steal you? ;)
I couldn't help but smile. "Let me see!" Shea exclaimed. "Okay, he's seriously too wonderful. That's so cute."
"I know, right?" I smiled.
Me: Well good morning to you, too :) Hmm, 6:30-ish sound ok? Where are we gonna eat?
Colin <3: Sounds good. And it's a surprise; you'll see :)
"Hey, Shea, want to go for a coffee run?" I asked after saying goodbye to Colin.
"Sure, that sounds amazing right now. I need a caffeine boost."
We grabbed our jackets and headed for our favorite on-campus cafe. We met up with our friend Jen on the way. Her long red hair was pulled into a messy bun, and she was wearing sweats with a lacrosse sweatshirt. We ordered our drinks and headed to the outdoor seating area.
"So, tell me about this Colin Wilson," Jen said once we settled down. I launched into the story for what seemed like the twentieth time already. It's not like I cared; I loved talking about it. Everything was perfect and amazing, so far.
"I'm so happy for you!" Jen exclaimed. "I've heard he's an amazing guy. You're really lucky."
"Thanks," I said with a smile. "It still seems unreal. I guess it hasn't settled in yet. I think tonight should change that."
"Watch out for Mary, though. Ever since he dumped her, she's been an even bigger b.itch. And a pain in the ass, especially when it comes to him," Jen warned.
"I'm a big girl, Jen. I can take care of myself."
Two hours later, I stood in front of my tiny closet, searching for the perfect outfit to wear. Not knowing the location of this dinner was proving to be problematic. I asked and asked, but he would not give me any hints.
"What about this?" I asked Shea, referring to the floral skirt, simple tank top, and cardigan in my hands. "It could be dressy or casual. And I could just wear flats."
"Ivy, it really doesn't matter what you wear." She paused. I threw my pillow as hard as I could, hitting her arms as she defended herself. We both cracked up at the blatant lie. We would always be slaves for fashion. "Just kidding..don't know where I was going with that. I think that's perfect, though. He'll love it."
"Awesome. I'm going to hop in the shower real quick. He should be here in about an hour." With that, the butterflies returned.
I hurried to the bathroom. I took a deep steadying breath and turned the hot water on. I allowed the steam to dissolve all thoughts and worries. My mind began to lull as my body relaxed. Tonight was going to be perfect.
Thirty minutes later, there was a knock on the door. After a final hair and make up check and reassuring words from Shea, I opened the door. Colin stood before me in khakis and a light blue button-down shirt. He looked as if he had just left a Ralph Lauren photo shoot. His eyes traveled the length of my body. Oddly enough, I did not feel self-conscious in the slightest. He paused on my face, looking into my eyes. "Hey," he breathed. "You look...wow." He leaned down and placed a kiss on my cheek. A tingling sensation lingered as his lips drifted away. "Do I really get to spend the evening with this?"
I felt my face begin to burn. "Maybe," I said with a devilish grin. Well played. "Unless you continue refusing to reveal the location of this 'secret date'. There could be a problem then."
"Don't worry, you'll know soon enough." He glanced at Shea, who was blatantly pretending to read her book. "Do I get the pleasure of meeting your roommate?" Shea's head whipped up, her messy bun becoming even looser. She hopped off the bed and hurried to the door.
"I'm Shea," she said while sticking out her hand to greet him. "Listen, break my girl's heart, and my boyfriend Brayden will kick you ass. Just sayin'."
"Um, don't worry, there should be no heartbreak here. But thanks for the advanced warning." The three of us began laughing in the doorway. "We should get going, I don't want it to get too dark. It was nice meeting you, Shea." Colin flashed his movie-star smile and led me away by the hand.
A twenty minute drive later, Colin stopped his car at a small beach by the ocean. He jumped out of the car and hurried to open my door. He then retrieved a picnic basket from the back. I pulled my shoes off and followed him through the sand. I watched as he spread a blanket across the ground and began unpacking food.
Once he finished, he stood and walked over to me. "Surprise. I thought this would be perfect. Just you and me, by the ocean with the setting sun. What do you think?" he asked, nervously peeking at my face.
I placed my hand on his cheek. "It's perfect," I whispered. "I can't imagine anything better." I took his hand and led him to the blanket. We ate and talked and, when silent, enjoyed the sound of the waves crashing to shore. He held me in his arms as we watched the sun set over the hills behind the beach. We packed the basket and walked hand-in-hand back to his car.
After stowing everything in the back, we walked to my side of the car. As he reached for the door handle, I stepped in front of the door. I wrapped my arms around his neck and stared into his baby blues. "Best first date ever," I whispered. He wrapped his arms around my waist. I leaned in, taking the risk and diving in. At long last, his lips met mine. It was the kind of kiss you thought only existed in black-and-white movies. Our lips moved as one as tingles sped up and down my spine. When we broke apart, I found shelter in his arms. As my smile grew, he held me even tighter.
